How to Set Client Expectations in the First 48 Hours

Unmet expectations are the root cause of almost every client dispute. The problem usually isn't that you failed; it's that the client expected something different. The window to fix this is incredibly small—you have about 48 hours after they sign the contract.

Define the Communication Channels

If you let a client text you on a Saturday during the first week, you have set the precedent that you are available via text on Saturdays. You must immediately funnel them into your official systems. "We manage all our projects and communication through your dedicated portal. This ensures nothing gets lost."

Outline the Timelines Clearly

Clients often assume things happen faster than they do. Break down your process visually. Show them the phases of the project in their dashboard. When they can see that Phase 1 takes two weeks, they won't email you on day three asking for Phase 2.

Define Success

What does a win look like this month? Document it. Put it in their portal. If you both agree on what success looks like, you can objectively point to it during your monthly review. Set the expectations early, and managing the client becomes effortless.
